Hawaiʻi Foodbank Website Design Case Study: Dual-Mission Impact

Summer 2025 – Present

Dual-Mission Digital Infrastructure for Island-Wide Hunger Relief

Web Excellence Award Winner

Hawaiʻi Foodbank website design needed to do what few nonprofit websites are asked to do well: serve two audiences with opposing needs. Hawaiʻi Foodbank serves Oʻahu and Kauaʻi as the anchor organization in a statewide food bank network (hui) that includes Maui Food Bank and Hawaiʻi Food Basket. Their digital presence had to support families in crisis seeking emergency food assistance, and donors funding a $35 million capital campaign chaired by Hawaiʻi’s Governor and First Lady. Recognizing that their legacy site was collapsing under the weight of both missions, Hawaiʻi Foodbank partnered with Technology Aloha for a full-scale digital ecosystem rebuild.

The Hawaiʻi Foodbank Website Design Challenge:

The previous website forced two urgent audiences into a single, confusing experience. Donors frustrated by buried giving pathways. Families in crisis struggling to find distribution sites or understand eligibility. Internally, the site was a bottleneck — updates took weeks, content was scattered and duplicated, and staff lacked the infrastructure to manage a high-stakes capital campaign while responding to economic shutdowns and surges in need. With a $35 million campaign launching and community need rising, a cosmetic refresh was not an option.

What was the process for the Hawaiʻi Foodbank website redesign?

Technology Aloha began with a principle: clarity of purpose for every user, every page, every interaction. We restructured the information architecture to separate and elevate both missions — streamlined pathways to emergency food assistance, distribution site maps (including localized Kauaʻi maps), and eligibility information for those seeking help; clear calls-to-action for giving, volunteering, and corporate partnership for donors and supporters.

We deployed custom post types for Campaigns and Events, transforming what had been custom-developed one-off pages into structured, template-driven content staff could manage independently. Global sections for impact metrics — meals distributed, families served, volunteer hours — eliminated inconsistent data across pages. Mega-menus provided deep access without overwhelming users. Mobile-first UX testing ensured performance where most community-facing traffic arrives.

Beyond the build, we redesigned how the organization manages its digital presence. A two-round, in-context commenting workflow replaced email chaos with precise feedback captured directly on staging pages — critical during the capital campaign microsite launch, where input from the Governor’s office, major donors, and internal teams had to be resolved without derailing the timeline. A help-desk workflow with embedded submission forms transformed request turnaround from weeks to days, and in some cases, hours.

What digital solution did Technology Aloha implement for Hawaiʻi Foodbank?

The result is a performance-optimized, accessible, mobile-first platform engineered to pass Google Core Web Vitals, GTmetrix, and PageSpeed benchmarks, with ADA-compliant color contrast, navigation, and form design. The ecosystem scales: the main site, the capital campaign microsite, and the Kauaʻi site share a cohesive design system and architecture, establishing a replicable model for other food banks in the hui. Hawaiʻi Foodbank’s existing brand identity — signature greens and orange, rounded corner motifs, cleanliness as a visual metaphor for food safety — was respected and refined rather than replaced, carrying forward the trust already built in the community.

What were the key results of the Hawaiʻi Foodbank website redesign?

  • Central digital infrastructure for a $35 million capital campaign chaired by Hawaiʻi’s Governor and First Lady, with four bank CEOs as co-chairs
  • Capital campaign microsite praised by campaign leadership, including the CEO of Hawaiʻi Community Foundation: “This site looks beautiful and the case for support looks amazing”
  • Request turnaround reduced from weeks to days — sometimes hours — through the new help-desk workflow
  • Staff empowered to launch and update campaigns and events independently via template-driven custom post types
  • Kauaʻi site launched on the same architecture, creating a replicable, scalable model across the island network
  • Site supports expanded emergency food distributions during economic shutdowns and surges in need
  • Builds on award-winning work for sister organization Maui Food Bank (Web Excellence Award, C2A Honorable Mentions, Webby Award Nominee)
  • Awarded the Web Excellence Award for Nonprofit Website Design

Brand Story: Hawai’i Foodbank’s Dual-Mission Impact

Hawaiʻi Foodbank’s redesign is not a cosmetic refresh — it’s mission-critical infrastructure. The new ecosystem enables the organization to serve two high-stakes audiences with clarity, speed, and dignity, while building the internal systems and capacity to sustain and evolve its digital presence for years to come. It removes barriers between people in need and the resources that can help them, and between a mission-driven organization and the support it needs to thrive. It’s a model for what thoughtful UX, rigorous information architecture, performance engineering, and process innovation can do when the stakes are real — and it sets a new standard for hunger relief organizations operating across complex, multi-property ecosystems.
